The current phase of refurbishment at the OR Tambo International Airport, in Gauteng, is focusing on high-impact passenger areas, namely refurbishing escalators and travelators, installing ergonomic seating, enhancing wayfinding signage and replacing carpets with tiling at all international boarding gates.

The airport is also accelerating the refurbishment of the terminal ablution facilities in direct response to passenger feedback, says State-owned airports operator Airports Company South Africa (ACSA).

Specifically, new ablution facilities are now operational on the ground floor at Domestic Arrivals and the Domestic Departures near Central Security.

When Phase 1 is completed in March, 90 individual toilets will be modernised, while Phase 2, which will start in July, will modernise 780 individual toilets that have premium finishes that prioritise hygiene and comfort, ACSA says.

The refurbishment work is part of the airport's five-year, R14.5-billion infrastructure programme. The strategic investment will modernise key infrastructure, boost operational reliability and enhance passenger experience.

“This programme directly addresses the expectations of our passengers for facility standards and infrastructure that meets global benchmarks. We are working towards an airport that moves people efficiently while delivering comfort and excellence,” says OR Tambo International Airport regional GM Jabu Khambule.
